Coping Strategies

Practical, compassionate ways to care for yourself while grieving.

Caring for yourself

Small, supportive steps can make grief more manageable.

Bereavement takes time and cannot be hurried. The goal is not to suppress emotion, but to find safe ways to move through it.

Strategies that may help

  • Talk with family and friends who understand the relationship you shared with your pet.
  • Consider joining a pet-loss support group or speaking with a qualified grief professional.
  • Allow emotions to be felt rather than relying on alcohol or drugs to avoid them.
  • Anticipate difficult milestones, including birthdays and the date of passing, and decide in advance how you may wish to mark them.
  • Create a simple remembrance practice that feels meaningful to you.

When to seek professional help

If intense grief, anger, or depression is worsening, or if you are struggling to carry out daily activities, it may be useful to speak with a grief counsellor or therapist. Ongoing disconnection, inability to trust others, or persistent self-blame also deserve attention from a qualified professional.
